"One of the most stimulating and moving performances of the decade" The Village Voice
Invited back by popular demand, the worldwide smash success Borrowed Light makes a triumphant return to Jacob's Pillow this July. The Tero Saarinen Company / Boston Camerata production has been performed for over fifty captive audiences worldwide, including an international tour of eleven concerts in 2011.
Inspired by the Shaker culture, this memorable production is both austere and euphoric, with a score of powerful and moving Shaker spirituals sung live onstage by members of The Boston Camerata. The Tero Saarinen Company dancers twist, turn, and stomp in rigorous and ecstatic choreography as dramatic costumes and evocative lighting and set design by Mikki Kunttu add to a highly theatrical experience.
The Boston Globe called Borrowed Light "a powerful, strikingly original evocation of communal devotion unlike anything this reviewer has experienced." The New York Times raves, "The movements evoke religious austerity and ecstasy" and "considering the...deep Shaker tradition in this part of the country, Jacob's Pillow is the ideal spot to see and hear this dance."
Borrowed Light will be featured at Jacob's Pillow's 80th Anniversary Festival for six performances, July 11-15, 2012.
